THE BATTLE OF CULLODEN MOOR

INTRODUCTION

The Battle of Culloden was a turning point in history, after that day a great many lives would change and today the effects of that day can still be seen. The battle of the 16th April 1746 followed with the highland clearances and for the 150 years after that were the mass migration of highlanders to countries including the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. On arrival in these new worlds areas were named after their home country, towns and villages, and today these names still exist.

The events of the 16th of April have also left their mark on the Burke's Landed Gentry family records, with a great many records containing colourful details of the events of the Jacobite rising. A quick search in the records will reveal that; William the 4th Earl of Kilmarnock was captured at Culloden, and beheaded on Tower Hill as a Jacobite;
